MINI TREATMENTS

It is not always possible, or necessary, to carry out the whole sequence; much can be achieved in shorter, more focused sessions. Furthermore, some people may wish to try a sample before committing to a full body treatment. At other times, lying on the floor may be inappropriate or impossible. If so, or if time is limited, a partial treatment can be used. You will also find that you have to adapt some techniques to individual circumstances, for instance to treat an elderly or injured person who cannot lie down in certain positions.

In fact, Shiatsu to certain parts of the body can still have a comprehensive effect on the whole system, for many parts contain treatment areas for the whole. So here are some options for shorter treatments.

Face, head, neck and shoulders

For someone suffering upper body tension or headache, who would like a more informal treatment, this is a good alternative. Lessons 9 and 10 cover these areas.

Front of body

Treating the whole of the front of the body also benefits all major body systems, and may be more appropriate where there are frontal problems, for instance in the abdominal area. Start with the shoulders, and work down to the feet, including work on both hands and feet, and finishing with the face. Again, you will need to adapt your technique to treat the soles of the feet from this position.

Feet only

This is a popular and enjoyable treatment in itself, which many people find very sensuous. If you are just doing the feet, your partner might prefer to sit in a comfortable chair with their feet raised on a stool. The feet are also prime candidates for self-Shiatsu.

Hands only

The hands can be given Shiatsu in almost any situation; regular treatment is very helpful for arthritis. Again, self-treatment is easy, and more discrete, so can be used in more places. It is particularly useful for revitalization during the day.
