The energy channels
Awareness and understanding of the channels or meridians are vital to the development of your Shiatsu technique. They are usually considered to provide the most valuable guideline for where to apply treatment, and the effect it will have. The concept of meridians brings together the Classical Chinese system of vital organs and the oriental concept of Ki.
The meridians can be thought of as a web or network of energy channels, running through the body, connecting each organ system with the extremities of the body - the head, hands and feet. In classical oriental medical texts, they are described rather poetically as 'the web that has no weaver'. Where a channel runs near the skin surface, it permits treatment that will primarily affect the corresponding organ system.
There are fourteen major classical meridians in total. Ten of them are associated with the major physical organs and are paired, in keeping with the associations of organs through their complementary 'energetic' functions:
- Lung with Large Intestine
- Stomach with Spleen
- Heart with Small Intestine
- KI in THE HUMAN BODY
- Bladder with Kidney
- Liver with Gall Bladder
In addition to these, there are two more pairs of energy meridians which do not have corresponding organs in the physical sense, but are important nevertheless. These are:
Heart Governor and Triple Heater
