FACIAL SELF—SHIATSU

Many pressure points corresponding to different organs in the body occur in the face, so its treatment brings benefit to the whole system. It also releases facial tension, tones the skin and muscles, and brings extra circulation to the area. A daily facial treatment will help offset the effects of stress or ageing, and make you look consistently brighter and fresher.
The sequence here is an adaptation of lesson 10 in Part One, adding techniques around the eyes that are unsuitable to use on others; you may wish to refer back to the points made previously, and the notes on benefits associated with them. As usual, pressure is generally exerted on the out-breath, and everything is repeated three or more times.
1. You can sit, stand or kneel to carry out this sequence. Begin by massaging the ears. Squeeze and pull them strongly, all around the outer ear including the lobes.
2. With your thumbs, press in under the chin. Move the thumbs simultaneously away from each other towards the ears, pressing under the edge of the jaw until you reach ears.
3. With the tips of your forefingers, press into the hollows that appear at the end of the jaw-bone when you open your mouth, just under the main part of the ear and behind the earlobe. Treating this point helps with metabolism and the distribution of heat in the body.               
4. Starting just in front of the lower ear, press with your thumbs along the underside of the cheek-bone. Follow the lower edge of the bone until it disappears near the nose. Treating these pressure points is helpful for sinus and nasal congestion, facial tension and toothache.
5. With the tips of your forefingers, press into the two small hollows just to either side of the nostrils. These are the classical Shiatsu points for treatment of sinusitis; they also help with facial tension.
